1. EPA MANDATES NITROGEN OXIDE AND PARTICULATE MATTERS BE REDUCED.
- The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has mandated that all engines built after 12/31/06 must reduce the level of Nitrogen Oxides and other particulate matter below current levels. The Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) exhausted by the engine will be limited to just over 1.0 grams per brake horsepower hour (g/bhp-hr). Particulate matter (PM) cannot exceed .01g/bhp-hr.
- NOx will be reduced by increasing the percentage levels of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and, in some installations, with the addition of a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC). PM, made of soot and ash, will be reduced through the use of a diesel particulate filter (DPF). Both the DPF, and when required, the DOC will be housed in an After-treatment Device (ATD).
2. NEW AFTER-TREATMENT DEVICE REPLACES MUFFLER.
- The ATD is a canister that replaces the muffler. It houses a Cordierite ceramic substrate brick called a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and, if required by t ... more |

Berkeley County site chosen for corporate headquarters and state-of-the-art assembly plant
Ladson, SC (August 16, 2006) - American LaFrance, LLC announced today that its new corporate headquarters and state-of-the-art emergency and vocational vehicle assembly plant will be built along Interstate 26 in Berkeley County, between Summerville and Jedburg.
Previous plans to relocate on property adjacent to the Charleston Southern University campus in North Charleston were revised when the company and the site’s design-build developer were unable to finalize the deal in a time frame that would permit timely completion of the new plant. The delays made it necessary for the company to seek a new location in the Charleston Tri-County area.
“Because of our imminent move in 2007 from the existing facility to accommodate DaimlerChrysler’s expansion in Palmetto Commerce Park, it was critical that we finalize our site arrangements,” said John Stevenson, President and CEO of American LaFrance, LLC.

Q. How does it work? A. VIS-Check is a performance based brake tester (PBBT) combined with a dynamic road simulator. The brake tester measures the braking force produced by each wheel on a vehicle, right to left and axle by axle. It then produces a definitive report on the health of the vehicle’s brakes including a Pass or Fail rating to DOT specifications. The road simulator allows technicians to view steering and suspension components under harsh operating conditions. Otherwise undetectable mechanical issues are easily spotted on the VIS-Check System.
