Located directly below this press release you will find the Freightliner press release announcing the sale of American LaFrance. As Chairperson of the American LaFrance Dealer Council and Dealer Principal of Campbell Supply Co., Inc., a second generation fire truck dealership, I felt it necessary to comment on the impending sale and what it means to our customers and employees. I firmly believe and support Chris Paterson’s comments when he states, “While the company (Freightliner) has been driving improvement programs in recent times and we believe American LaFrance business has growth and profitability potential, we also believe this potential is better realized by a company that has a focus on American LaFrance’s core markets.”
There is no question that American LaFrance’s enviable market position is attributed directly to Freightliner’s position as American LaFrance’s parent company and its unwavering support of the American LaFrance business unit.

The academy trains over 8,000 fire fighters a year from 300 fire departments throughout the state.

SOUTH BEND, IN. The Freightliner Group unveiled a new Test Engineering facility yesterday at its proving grounds here, where it also announced that electronic stability control (ESC), the next step in the company’s active safety technology, will be available on some Class 8 vehicles later in the year.
The truck maker committed $2.5 million to the development and construction of the 24,600-sq. ft. building, which houses state-of-art equipment for servicing test vehicles, as well as offices for the Freightliner Group Test Engineering staff.
According to Ramin Younessi, chief test engineer, the primary purpose of the South Bend proving grounds is to put vehicles through “accelerated durability testing.” In order to evaluate the structural integrity and reliability of every component, vehicles are put through eight different events. Conditions on the “torture track” are so severe that every mile driven on it is equivalent to about 83 miles in real-world operation.

Ladson, SC – American LaFrance has joined forces with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) to help recognize firefighting heroes who have died in the line of duty. American LaFrance will donate $100 from every invoiced vehicle sale directly to the NFFF. In addition, company employees will staff – on a volunteer basis – many of the upcoming NFFF events, including the 2005 Memorial Weekend, Oct. 7-9.
“The NFFF is a reputable organization with a very important mission – to make sure our fallen heroes are not forgotten,” John Stevenson, president of American LaFrance, explained. “American LaFrance will do everything we can to make sure they have the resources to do that. We believe the most important parts of the lifesaving industry are the firefighters and rescue workers who live their lives for the safety of others. As a member of the industry, we believe it is our responsibility to help recognize those heroes.”

Indianapolis, Ind. – American LaFrance vehicles will now come standard with their own line of proprietary steer and drive axles on all of their custom chassis platforms. These axles are the same proven products used today in thousands of severe-duty vocational vehicles provided by Sterling and Freightliner. The products have been designed to provide enhanced performance while reducing life-cycle costs.
The proprietary steer axles provide easy-to-maintain features and a high degree of wheel cut that improves maneuverability. The steer axle comes standard with an expanded warranty, which includes king pins and bearings.
The proprietary drive axles provide increased ground clearance and the precision ground gear provides for a stronger, more durable product. The head assembly is housed in a one-piece carrier which provides a stronger, more rigid design. Maintenance is also easier with these axles and they require less lubrication, thus reducing the life-cycle cost, as well.
