As you drive down the main street of North Charleston's Palmetto Commerce Park and enter the complex of American LaFrance Corporation, one word comes to mind: impressive. From the Striking American eagle-and-cross logo emblazoned across the 300,000-plus-square-foot building to the contemporary glass entrance with signature vehicles on display outside, it's obvious that American LaFrance has arrived in the Lowcountry - and it's here to stay. The story of American LaFrance's moving its corporate headquarters and manufacturing facilities to North Charleston is an interesting one. Palmetto Commerce Park was developed in 1995 with truck assembler and distributor Western Star as its inaugural tenant. Freightliner Inc., a division of DaimlerChrysler AG, acquired Western Star for $25 million in 2000. With the cyclical nature of the heavy truck industry, Freightliner decided to close Western Star a few months later due to poor market conditions and excess capacity. In 1995, Freightliner had acquired America ... more |

American LaFrance Introduces New Body Design Structurally-Fastened Body Provides Exceptional Strength and Durability INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA . . . American LaFrance Corporation today introduced a new body design for its custom and commercial chassis that offers superior structural integrity and strength. The new body, showcased at the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) here, will be available in aluminum or stainless steel and comes complete with engineering documentation.
The new American LaFrance body exceeds the strength of a traditional, welded aluminum body and reduces the “as-built” weight by approximately one-third. The strength is achieved by using mating flanges at all joining surfaces, utilizing mechanical fasteners in specific patterns to join the body components, and supporting the entire configuration with a substructure designed to isolate the body from chassis frame movement.
“With this new body design, fire departments receive a stronger body at less weight which allows ... more |

If American LaFrance succeeds at taking away business from other makers of emergency vehicles, the payroll at its new North Charleston plant would swell to 800 employees by 2004. "This might well be the biggest single jobs announcement that the region has ever seen ... right out of the gate," said Steve Dykes, director of economic development for Charleston County. American LaFrance, a division of automotive giant DaimlerChrysler AG, announced plans in May to move its North Carolina corporate headquarters and 210 positions to the former Western Star Trucks complex off Ladson Road by early 2003. Gov. Jim Hodges sounded a chrome fire bell Monday to mark the $12 million reopening of the once-idled plant. Scott Barnes, vice president of sales for American LaFrance, called the symbolic gesture a "warning ... to our competitors."
"Get out of the way, we're coming," Barnes told the audience of 300 onlookers. American LaFrance began moving into the 284,000-square-foot building in F ... more |
